Technique & Training Barbells
FAQ
What’s the difference between a technique bar and a training bar?
Technique bars are ultra-light (around 15 lb) and designed to learn and refine form, while training bars are full-length steel 15 kg/20 kg bars built for progressive loading. REP offers both options in this category so you can match the bar to your goals.
Who should choose a 15 lb technique bar vs. a 15 kg or 20 kg training bar?
Go with the 15 lb technique bar if you’re a beginner, youth lifter, rehabbing, or drilling positions with light plates; choose 15 kg (25 mm) or 20 kg (28 mm) training bars if you want a standard Olympic feel and plan to load heavier. REP Fitness designs this lineup to help you start light and transition smoothly to full-weight bars.
Will these bars fit my rack and work with my existing plates?
Yes—REP technique and training bars use standard 50 mm Olympic sleeves and are compatible with most racks and 2" plates; just stay within a technique bar’s lower load capacity.
Can I use a technique bar for heavy lifts?
Technique bars aren’t meant for heavy squats, pulls, or presses; use them for warm-ups, high-rep practice, and learning bar path. Move to a REP training bar when you’re ready to load more weight.
What features should I compare (knurling and sleeve spin)?
Compare knurl feel (light vs. medium), markings, and whether the sleeves use bushings or bearings, since spin affects Olympic lifts and general training; our overview of barbell sleeves (bushings vs. bearings) explains the tradeoffs. For a broader overview of bar types and use cases, see our Barbell Comparison Guide.
