FAQ

How do I choose the right barbell for my training style?

For all-around training, pick a mixed-use Olympic bar with medium knurl and balanced spin; powerlifters prefer a stiffer power bar (often with center knurl), while Olympic lifting benefits from more spin and whip. REP’s lineup spans these styles, and our guide to different types of barbells for different lifts breaks down when to choose each.

Do all weight plates fit all barbells?

No—match the bar’s sleeve diameter to the plate hole. Most Olympic barbells use 2" (50 mm) sleeves, so pair them with Olympic plates; 1" “standard” plates won’t fit.

Should I choose bumper plates, iron plates, or urethane‑coated grip plates?

Bumpers are best if you drop lifts or need quieter training; iron plates are compact and budget-friendly; urethane‑coated grip plates like REP’s Equalizer offer easy handling and a premium, durable finish. For a deeper comparison, see our guide to picking the best weight plates.

How much weight should I start with?

Many home gyms start with pairs of 2.5, 5, 10, 25, and 45 lb plates to cover most lifts, then add change or fractional plates for smaller progressions. This setup supports varied loading without overbuying at the start.

When should I add a specialty bar?

Add a trap/hex bar for deadlifts and carries, a safety squat bar for shoulder‑friendly squats, or a Swiss/cambered or curl bar to vary pressing and arm work. REP designs these specialty bars with Olympic sleeves, so they work with the same 2" plates you already own.
